Dennis Aogo is a 29-year-old defender and defensive midfielder for FC Schalke 04. Aogo was born in 1987 in Karlsruhe as the son of a Nigerian father and German mother and began playing football at the age of 6 for the Bulacher SC. After a year, he switched to the Karlsruher SC, where he stayed until the year 2000, then moved on to SV Waldhof Mannheim and SC Freiburg. His professional career began at SC Freiburg, where he played from 2004 to 2008, before signing a 4-year contract with Hamburger SV. He was loaned out to Schalke in the 2013-14 season, with a purchase option at the end of the season. Despite sustaining a knee injury during practice, he was signed by Schalke through 2017, with an option for an additional year. Aogo also played for the German national team from 2002 through 2013. Aogo has sometimes been criticized for his slow and relaxed play, which he attributes to his Nigerian origins.
