Visitors 1. FC Köln continued their revival on Friday with a 3:2 win over hosts FC Augsburg. The first half of the match belonged to the visitors, with goals from Ondrej Duda in the 8th and 33rd minutes and a goal from Florian Kainz in the 23rd minute. Augsburg revived in the 2nd half, though, with a goal from Robert Gumny in the 54th minute and a further goal from Ruben Vargas in the 62nd minute, but it was not enough to deprive Köln of their 2nd win in 3 games under new coach Friedhelm Funkel. The victory now pushes Köln up into the relegation playoff spot heading into the rest of the weekend’s matches. Relegation remains a multi-club contest going into the last few weeks of the season, and the uncertainty is partially driven by Hertha’s COVID isolation through the rest of April. Schalke will be dropping into the 2. Bundesliga next season, following their loss several days ago to Bielefeld. One of the clubs now fighting to stay out of the relegation zone is Werder Bremen, who will travel to 1. FC Union Berlin on Saturday. Bremen fell to Mainz 1:0 on Wednesday, a loss that dropped them below Mainz in the table and just 1 point above the relegation zone. Bremen have now lost all 6 of their last Bundesliga outings, and striker Josh Sargent has gone 5 games without scoring a single goal. In all of the meetings so far between these 2 clubs, the away side has won, but Union Berlin haven’t lost at home since the season’s first weekend, with 6 wins and 8 draws at home since then. Mainz will have the misfortune of hosting FC Bayern München on Saturday, a match that will see the return of Robert Lewandowski from a knee ligament injury. Lewandowski needs 6 more goals in the remaining 4 matches to break Gerd Müller’s record of 40 goals in a single season. Mainz, however, is a dramatically improved club under former defender Bo Svensson, having picked up 25 of 45 points and are unbeaten in their last 6 contests. Bielefeld will travel to Gladbach on Sunday, and much is at stake for both clubs. Gladbach are still in the hunt for spots in European competition, a hunt which suffered a setback in a 3:2 loss to Hoffenheim earlier in the week. Bielefeld are benefiting from their midweek win over Schalke and from Hertha’s temporary absence, but need more points to stay out of the relegation zone. Bielefeld haven’t won this fixture since the 2002/3 season, and have since lost 7 of the 9 matches since then.
