Mainz recorded their first home win of the season on Friday with a 5:0 shutout of visitors 1. FC Köln. The match’s first goal came in the 11th minute, when Marcus Ingvartsen converted a penalty. His goal was followed by a goal from Dominik Kohr in the 35th minute, and a goal from Anton Stach in the 40th minute, to give the hosts a 3:0 lead after the first half. Mainz’s scoring run continued in the second half, when Aaron Martin whipped in free kick in the 73rd minute, and the final goal came in the 83rd minute, when Karim Onisiwo sealed the deal for the hosts. The 5:0 win is tied for the club’s biggest-ever Bundesliga victory; the other such result came in December 2019 at Bremen. Mainz now goes into the rest of the weekend’s matches with a temporary spot in third place in the league. Saturday will feature several matches between clubs with similar positions in the table, but the biggest one may well be that later on Saturday between hosts Borussia Mönchengladbach and visitors Eintracht Frankfurt. Eintracht are 1 point ahead of Gladbach in the table, and are coming off a DFB Pokal win over the Stuttgarter Kickers on Tuesday. Last weekend, Frankfurt also bested Bayer Leverkusen with a 5:1 finish. Gladbach will be without the services of goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who suffered an ankle injury in the club’s 2:1 DFB Pokal loss at Darmstadt on Tuesday. He has been replaced by Tobias Sippel, who is set to make his first league start. Jonas Hofmann was also injured on Tuesday, but club captain Lars Stindl is expected to make his return and join Alassane Plea and Marcus Thuram in attack. Thuram has scored in 3 straight Bundesliga matches, and all 4 of Gladbach’s Bundesliga wins this season have occurred at home. Conversely, Frankfurt are winless in their last 11 away matches in the top flight. Both of the league’s clubs in Germany’s capital city will play their matches on Sunday. Union Berlin will continue their potential march to the championship when they host Bochum, a club that did manage to defeat Elversberg in a DFB Pokal match during the week. It has been almost 6 years, however, since the bottom side won against the league leaders: Ingolstadt did win against Leipzig in December 2016. Hertha will host Schalke in the weekend’s final match, and the Old Lady could post their first home win of the season. The visitors now have an interim coach in Matthias Kreutzer. Should Schalke lose on Sunday, it would be their 7th defeat after 11 matches, a new club record.
