Wolfsburg came from behind on Friday to continue their perfect start to the season as they tied hosts Fortuna Düsseldorf, 1:1. Düsseldorf’s goal came in the 16th minute of the match when Nico Gießelmann scored his first Bundesliga goal off a loose ball, but the lead was short-lived. Wolfsburg’s Wout Weghorst, who scored his 3rd goal of the season from just a few meters out in the 29th minute. The draw not only moved Wolfsburg into 2nd place going into the rest of the weekend’s matches, but also ends Düsseldorf’s run of 2 consecutive defeats. Saturday will feature several must-see matches. One of those will be the Rhine derby when Borussia Mönchengladbach travel to nearby 1. FC Köln for the 89th Bundesliga meeting between the 2 clubs. Köln claimed their first points in the table last weekend when they came from behind to defeat Freiburg, thanks to goals from Anthony Modeste and Ellyes Skhiri, and have managed to score at least once in all 3 league matches this season. Gladbach this week have been worrying whether standout Matthias Ginter will be fit to play this weekend: Ginter suffered bruised ribs in Germany’s UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying match against Northern Ireland. At the same time as the Rhine derby, Bayer Leverkusen will travel to nearby Borussia Dortmund, and the 2 clubs are currently separated in the table by just 1 point. Leverkusen have not suffered a loss for 9 straight Bundesliga matches. Later on Saturday, Leipzig will host Bayern in a contest of the league’s hottest 2 strikers: Robert Lewandowski and Timo Werner. Leipzig’s Werner has never been in better form, having scored 10 goals in his last 11 Bundesliga matches, including all 3 of this season’s matches - 1 of which, against Gladbach, featured his first hat trick. Werner is supported by the league’s top assist provider, Marcel Sabitzer, who has scored 3 goals himself. Werner’s goal count this season is exceeded only by Bayern’s legendary Lewandowski, with 6 goals in his first 3 matches this season. Lewandowski will face the league’s toughest defense: Leipzig have allowed only 2 goals in 3 matches. The clubs’ first Bundesliga contest occurred in December 2016, and in the 6 matches since, Bayern has won 4, Leipzig has won 1, and there has been 1 draw. On Sunday, the 2 clubs representing Baden-Württemberg in the 1. Bundesliga face off when Freiburg travel to Sinsheim for a southwest derby. Hoffenheim, the hosts, are coming off a 2-match unbeaten streak, and only narrowly fell to Frankfurt on Matchday 1. Freiburg, though, are 2 points better in the table, having defeated both Mainz and Paderborn before losing to Cologne.
