The 2018-19 Bundesliga season began on Friday with Bayern winning 3:1 over Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena. The season’s first goal came from Thomas Müller in the 23rd minute, but Hoffenheim was able to briefly even the score in the 57th minute when Adam Szalai fired the ball past Manuel Neuer. This was the 14th time that Bayern has scored the Bundesliga season’s opening goal, and Thomas Müller now has 5 Matchday 1 goals to his name. Among this season’s changes are the introduction of on-screen text explanations for every video-assist check and the use of a calibrated offside line for video-assist checks, the new Derbystar Brillant APS ball with a traditional black and white design and red Bundesliga logo, headsets for coaches to allow communication between staff on the touchline and staff in the stands, the use of 3 tablets by coaching staff to access match data, and 2 new referees promoted from the 2. Augsburg retains the services of Andre Hahn, while 12-goal striker Alfre∂ Finnbogason is still struggling to recover from an injury This will be only the 3rd meeting of the 2 sides, and comes 6 years to the day after their first, which Düsseldorf won. The league’s other newcomer this season, 1. FC Nürnberg, will travel to Berlin on Saturday to face Hertha Berlin. This will be the first meeting of the 2 clubs since December 2015, when Hertha won 2:0 in the last 16 of the DFB Cup. In the Bundesliga, however, Hertha are winless in 6 matches against Nürnberg, and captain Hanno Behrens scored 14 goals last season. Behrens came up through the Hamburg youth system and will make his 1. Bundesliga debut on Saturday. Sunday’s highlight match will undoubtedly be the contest between Dortmund and Leipzig. New Dortmund captain Marco Reus is unbeaten in 2 career appearances against Leipzig, but Leipzig’s first-ever Bundesliga win came against Dortmund in 2016.
