Bundesliga News - 2016/2017 Matchday 10

Hertha soundly defeated Gladbach on Friday, 3:0.  The win bumps Hertha back up into 3rd place going into Saturday’s matches, with all 3 goals coming from Salomon Kalou.  Gladbach has not won a game since Matchday 5, and the loss of Christoph Kramer for picking up a 2nd yellow card in the first half didn’t help.  Also on Friday, the DFB unanimously re-elected Reinhard Grindel as its president, and Grindel said that one of his priorities was to have Germany selected as the host for Euro 2024.  Grindel replaced Wolfgang Niersbach back in April, after Niersbach was banned for 1 year from all football-related activities for bribery connected with the 2006 World Cup in Germany.  Borussia Dortmund travels to Hamburg on Saturday, and the BVB will be looking to get back on track after a disappointing October.  The club tied Schalke in last weekend’s Revierderby,  tied Ingolstadt and Hertha the 2 prior weeks, and lost to Leverkusen at the beginning of October.  Hamburg, meanwhile, is dead last in the league, having lost 7 of 9 matches with a 16-goal differential.  Dortmund’s last win on Hamburg’s turf, however, was all the way back in 2012, and Saturday’s match will take place on the 80th birthday of Hamburg icon Uwe Seeler, who scored 404 goals for the club between 1953 and 1972.  Dortmund will have Aubameyang back following his 1-game suspension by the club for a side trip to Italy, but will have to do without Marcel Schmelzer, Nuri Sahin, Andre Schurrle, and possibly Raphael Guerreiro, while Hamburg could be without all 3 of their first-league goalkeepers due to injuries, and Bobby Wood, who was suspended for an elbow against Cologne last weekend.  Also on Saturday, the Bundesliga’s oldest and youngest coaches will face off, when Carlo Ancelotti’s (57) Bayern hosts Julian Nagelsmann’s (29) Hoffenheim.  While Bayern has the most-expensive team in the league and Hoffenheim fields a team of mid-level pros and promising talents, only 4 points separate the 2 clubs.  Bayern tried back in 2015 to sign Nagelsmann to coach their under-17 roster.
