RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai scored his first 2 Bundesliga goals for the club on Friday in a dominating 4:0 shutout of visitors VfB Stuttgart. Szoboszlai’s first goal came in the 38th minute of the match, when he advanced to the right-hand corner of Stuttgart’s box and dipped the ball past Florian Müller into the far corner. The match’s second goal came in the 46th minute, when Emil Forsberg scored off a flick from Andre Silva, and his goal was followed 6 minutes later by Szoboszlai’s second goal off a free kick. The match’s final goal came in the 65th minute, when Silva scored his first penalty kick goal for Leipzig. Leipzig have now won 6 of the last 7 Bundesliga meetings with Stuttgart, scoring 13 goals and conceding just 1. Going into Saturday’s contests, 7 clubs are all at the top of the table with 3 points each, and the weekend’s remaining contests will be important for any club looking for a permanent perch in the club’s top third. Dortmund will travel to Freiburg on Saturday and Erling Haaland will face off against Freiburg center-back Philipp Lienhart busy. Lienhart was key for Freiburg’s defense in last weekend’s scoreless draw against Bielefeld, while Haaland has had a hand in 7 goals across 2 the matches against Wehen Wiesbaden in the cup competition and Frankfurt on Matchday 1. Dortmund are currently on an 8-game winning streak in the Bundesliga, which ties their club record from 2011-2012 under Jürgen Klopp. Mainz will travel to Bochum on Saturday, and Mainz have continued their solid form since last season’s Rückrunde. Several club players had to self-isolate prior to Matchday 1, but their absences didn’t prevent Mainz from defeating Leipzig 1:0. Bochum returned to the top flight this season, but lost to Wolfsburg last weekend, meaning they have gone 13 Bundesliga matches without a win - and they have never beaten Mainz in the Bundesliga. On Sunday, Hoffenheim will host Union Berlin, which could end as the most exciting match of the weekend. The contest will feature 2 of the league’s best attackers in Andrej Kramaric and Max Kruse. Kramaric had 3 assists last weekend in Hoffenheim’s 4:0 win over Augsburg, while Kruse set up Taiwo Awoniyi’s goal in Union’s 1:1 draw last weekend against Leverkusen. Finally on Sunday, Bayern will host Köln, and Robert Lewandowski will no doubt be looking to extend his tradition of scoring against the Billy Goats - he has 14 goals in 15 outings against the club. Köln, however, have shown renewed vigor under new coach Steffen Baumgart, and the club beat Bayern 3:2 in a friendly earlier in the summer.

The 2021-2022 Bundesliga opened on Friday with a 1:1 draw between hosts Borussia Mönchengladbach and visitors FC Bayern München. Gladbach’s Alassane Plea opened the scoring just 10 minutes into the match, when Lars Stindl fed Plea, who coolly finished a shot past Manuel Neuer. Bayern was able to even the score however, just before the half ended, when striker Robert Lewandowski headed the ball into the goal off a corner from Joshua Kimmich in the 43rd minute. Lewandowski’s goal means he has scored on the season’s opening matchday for a record 7 consecutive seasons. Bayern are unbeaten in their previous 10 Matchday 1 fixtures, but Gladbach have been the only club to beat them on the opening weekend in the past 23 years. The clubs now get to enjoy a brief stint at the top of the table going into the rest of the weekend’s matches but will likely find themselves down in the middle by Sunday. The 2 newcomers to the league this season will both make their debuts on Saturday, when Bochum travel to Wolfsburg and Fürth travel to Stuttgart. Bochum were the 2. Bundesliga’s champions last season, and the Saturday fixture will be their first in top flight after an 11-year absence. The club’s attacking midfielder from last season, Robert Zulj, is no longer with the club, and they will be facing one of the league’s top scorers last season in Wout Weghorst. Weghorst is joined this season by U21 hero Lukas Nmecha, who scored 18 goals last season while on loan from Manchester City to Belgian side Anderlecht. Nmecha played for the Wolves back in 2019, so he is expected to make an impact quickly. Wolfsburg have a new trainer this season in Mark von Bommel, who took over after Oliver Glasner left for Eintracht Frankfurt. The league’s other newcomers, SpVgg Greuther Fürth, owe their promotion partly to the late-season stumble of Holstein Kiel, and partly to the scoring abilities of Branimir Hrgota, who found the net 16 times last season. He also has previous Bundesliga experience, as does teammate and USA international Julian Green, and both scored in last Saturday’s DFB Pokal regulation tie against Babelsberg. Of course, many will be watching the contest between hosts Borussia Dortmund and visitors Eintracht Frankfurt. Dortmund’s Erling Haaland has had a spectacular 18-month run at Dortmund, with 60 goals in 60 appearances. Looking ahead to Sunday, Mainz and Köln will have fresh starts after spending much of last season in relegation danger, while Leipzig will look to re-secure their spot atop the standings. |
