Kehrer was born September 21, 1966, in Tübingen, Germany, to a German father and Burundian mother, and began playing football for TSG Tübingen in 2000. His youth career continued at SSV Reutlingen 05 from 2006 to 2010, VfB Stuttgart from 2010 to 2012, and Schalke 04 from 2012 to 2015. His senior career began in 2015 on Schalke’s reserve squad, and his first Bundesliga match was on February 6, 2015 against Wolfsburg, in a 3:0 home win. Kehrer’s sister, Sarah Kehrer, has been dating FC Arsenal player and former Bremer Serge Gnabry.
