A second-half goal on Friday from Julian Brandt delivered a 1:0 home victory for Borussia Dortmund over visitors SV Werder Bremen. Brandt’s goal came in the 67th minute, when Emre Can passed the ball through Bremen’s defense for Brandt to chase and chip into the net. Brandt scored the goal in his 300th Bundesliga appearance, becoming the third-youngest player to reach that milestone. Dortmund are now undefeated in their previous 16 Bundesliga matches, and enjoy a slim 1-point lead in the table going into the rest of the weekend’s matches. That lead will, however, be challenged on Saturday when Leverkusen travel to Wolfsburg and Stuttgart travel to Union Berlin. Leverkusen have won 6 times so far this season, having only dropped points in a 2:2 draw with Bayern, and their joint-best attack has produced 23 goals, while their joint-second-best defense have conceded just 8. Two of the individual drivers of the goals scored have been Victor Boniface and Jonas Hofmann, who were both summer signings. Wolfsburg have not won at home to Leverkusen since October 2015. Stuttgart’s Serhou Guirassy, meanwhile, has broken Robert Lewandowski’s record for most goals to start a Bundesliga season, and currently leads the league with 13, and may well avenge Union’s 3:0 win over Stuttgart when the 2 clubs last met in April. Saturday’s matches culminate in the late match between hosts 1. FSV Mainz 05 and visitors FC Bayern München. The hosts have now gone 12 Bundesliga games without a win, and have collected just 2 points in 7 matches. The visitors are unbeaten in 7 matches, and are powered by signing Harry Kane, who has picked up 8 league goals, and has averaged 1 goal every 76 minutes. Sunday will feature one of the league’s biggest derbies, when 1. FC Köln host nearby Borussia Mönchengladbach. The derby is so well known that it even led to an incident in a July 2020 episode of German television program Gefragt - Gejagt, when contestant and Gladbach fan Claus Blümel was asked, “which club won the 2. Bundesliga title in 2018-19?” He knew the answer, but instead responded with “no, I’m not saying their name.” After the show aired, Gladbach gifted Blümel a jersey and a voucher worth 500 Euros, as Blümel would have won 500 Euros had he given the correct answer. Gladbach are going into Sunday’s derby with a marginally better record, as Köln have managed to collect just 1 point so far this season. When the two clubs last met in April, they played a 0:0 draw.
