The Bundesliga season commenced on Friday with a 4:0 Bayern shutout over hosts SV Werder Bremen. Harry Kane enjoyed a solid start in his full Bayern debut, providing both a goal and an assist. The assist came on Bayern’s first goal, when Jamal Musiala fed Kane to flick the ball through to Leroy Sane, who slotted the ball past Jiri Pavlenka in just the 4th minute. Kane then scored his own goal in the 74th minute with an assist from Alphonso Davies. Sane then notched his second goal in the 90th minute off an assist from Thomas Müller, and the match’s final goal came in the 4th minute of extra time, when Mathys Tel scored his opening goal of the season. The brace was Sane’s first-ever in the Bundesliga, and his first strike was the 18th time that a Bayern player has scored the opening goal of a new season. Bremen have lost 15 of their last 16 home games against Bayern, and last beat the record champions at the Weserstadion on October 21, 2006. Dortmund will resume their title chase against Bayern on Saturday, when they host nearby 1. FC Köln. Dortmund will continue to benefit from the return of Sebastien Haller, who missed half of last season due to a bout with testicular cancer. Although Dortmund lost Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid, the club has picked up new signings in Ramy Bensebaini, Felix Nmecha, and Marcel Sabitzer. Another competitor for the title this season is RB Leipzig, who had little difficulty defeating Bayern in last weekend’s Supercup. Leipzig picked up Xavi Simons, Lois Openda, and Benjamin Sesko in the off-season, and are anchored by Dani Olmo, who picked up a hat trick in the Supercup. Heidenheim has joined the top flight for the first time this season, and will have their opener on Saturday when they travel to Wolfsburg. Heidenheim’s promotion came at the very last minute last season, when they scored 2 goals in added time to break the hearts of Hamburg fans, who were on the verge of final returning to the 1. Bundesliga. We also cannot overlook Union Berlin, who have signed Kevin Volland from Monaco. Volland played for 1860 Munich, Hoffenheim, and Leverkusen before leaving for France in 2020, and his stint in Germany’s top flight included 80 goals for Leverkusen and nearly as many for Hoffenheim. Volland also holds the record for the fastest goal in the league. Union also signed Robin Gosens from Inter Milan. Gosens has spent the past 6 seasons in Italy’s Serie A, and could make his debut for Union on Sunday, when the club hosts Mainz. Gosens said that it had always been his dream to play in Germany and in the Bundesliga, and once had a trial with Dortmund.
