Bundesliga fans have some exciting competition to watch this weekend, with several clubs in close contention playing each other throughout the matchday. Dortmund will host Union Berlin on Saturday, and both clubs are in the hunt for the league title this season. The two clubs last met on Matchday 10, and at that time, Union were at the top of the table and Dortmund were in fourth place, and 4 points behind Union. Union won the match 2:0, but are now 2 points behind Dortmund in the table. A Dortmund win could punt the hosts into first place, while a Dortmund defeat would push the visitors into second place. Two more clubs in contention for the title also play on Saturday, when Freiburg host Bayern München. This match follows a stunning upset earlier in the week, when Freiburg came from behind to eliminate Bayern in the DFB Pokal. The win is undoubtedly a big morale booster for Freiburg, who have been on a run of draws, and now need wins to assure a spot in the UEFA Champions League. Freiburg’s Vincenzo Grifo is set to make his 200th Bundesliga appearance, and is second only to Niclas Füllkrug in goals scored this season. Bayern will certainly look for a repeat of this season’s reverse fixture, which they won 5:0, and the team that is atop the table at the end of Matchday 26 has gone on to win the title in each of the last 15 seasons. Also playing early on Saturday are hosts Leverkusen and visitors Frankfurt, who are separated by just 1 point in the table, and hosts Augsburg and visitors Köln, who are also separated by a single point. The final game on Saturday includes yet one more club who have their own title aspirations, when RB Leipzig travel to Hertha Berlin. While Hertha did pull off a draw against Freiburg last weekend, they remain in relegation danger and now desperately need wins. The Old Lady are, however, unbeaten in their last 3 home matches. Leipzig have also been struggling recently, including successive losses to Bochum and Mainz, but are coming off a 2:0 victory over Dortmund in the DFB Pokal. Leipzig also have more wins against Hertha than any other Bundesliga team they have faced, and have won all of their last six away matches against Hertha. Sunday’s early match will be that between hosts Borussia Mönchengladbach and visitors VfL Wolfsburg, in a match that will be important for Wolfsburg’s European ambitions. While Gladbach have harbored the same ambitions, a poor run in 2023 has left them 9 points off the European places. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, are on a 5-game unbeaten streak, and have conceded a league-low 12 goals in 13 away matches. Sunday concludes with more relegation competition, with Stuttgart traveling to Bochum and Schalke traveling to Hoffenheim. Neither Stuttgart nor Schalke have any chance of escaping the relegation zone this weekend, even if both win.
