Hosts Eintracht Frankfurt were held by visitors VfL Bochum 1848 to a 1:1 draw on Friday. The visitors struck first, in the 14th minute, when Takuma Asano converted a rebound. Just 8 minutes later, Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani converted a penalty. Muani’s goal is his 7th so far this year, and leaves him as the highest scorer in the league in 2023. While Bochum have conceded a league-high 13 penalties this term, Friday’s point leaves them a full 5 points clear of the relegation zone going into the rest of the weekend’s matches. Schalke will be looking to escape the relegation zone on Saturday when they host nearby Leverkusen. Both teams are currently enjoying remarkable runs. The Royal Blues are currently undefeated in the Rückrunde, and a win or draw on Saturday would stretch their unbeaten streak to 9 straight. Schalke are the first team in Bundesliga history to be at the bottom of the table at the end of a Hinrunde before going unbeaten in their next 8 matches. For their part, the Werkself are enjoying a run of 5 successive wins in all competitions, including a win over Bayern before the international break. Leverkusen are unbeaten in their last 7 meetings with Schalke, including 5 victories. The big match on Saturday, though, is the Klassiker between hosts FC Bayern München and visitors Borussia Dortmund, and this may well be the biggest contest of the entire season. Dortmund currently enjoy a 1-point lead in the table, and this is the first time since August 2019 that the club has entered a matchday in first place. The club has started 2023 with an unbeaten streak across 10 league matches, a streak that has included a league-high 30 goals. Dortmund even succeeded in staging a comeback in this season’s reverse fixture to draw Bayern, which was back on matchday 9. Bayern are coming into the match knowing they have history on their side: the last time they weren’t at the top of the table this far into the season, they scored 5 goals against Dortmund (matchday 27 in the 2018-19 season) and went on to become champions by 2 points in the table. Bayern are also enjoying an incredible goal differential in the league, with a +45, thanks to a league-high 72 goals scored. Regardless of Saturday’s outcome, you won’t want to miss Sunday’s derby between hosts 1. FC Köln and visitors Borussia Mönchengladbach. While the season started promisingly for Cologne, the club has picked up just 6 points in 8 matches. Gladbach haven’t been doing much better, with just 3 more points in their 8 contests. While the Billy Goats lost the reverse fixture 5:2, the Foals have recorded more wins (52) and goals (188) against Köln than against any other club.
