1. FC Köln extended their unbeaten strike to 5 games on Friday with a 3:1 win over visitors SpVgg Greuther Fürth. It was Fürth, however, who scored first in the match when Marco Meyerhöfer collected a pass from Timothy Tillman and put the ball past Cologne keeper Timo Horn. The rest of the match belonged to the hosts. Sebastian Andersson poked in a cross from Benno Schmitz in the 50th minute, and just 5 minutes later, Ellyes Skhiri found the net from close range. Skhiri then scored his second goal of the match on a break in the 89th minute. The win now leaves Cologne in sixth place going into the rest of the weekend’s matches. A derby between 2 clubs in southwest Germany takes place on Saturday when Stuttgart host Hoffenheim, and just 3 points separate the teams in the middle of the table. Stuttgart have been struggling this season, having just 1 win, 2 defeats, and 3 draws, and haven’t won at home since May. A loss on Saturday could leave them occupying one of the relegation slots. Hoffenheim are coming off a win last weekend, having broken Wolfsburg’s unbeaten start to the season. It was their first win since matchday 1, as the club has since split points with Union Berlin and Bielefeld, and narrowly lost to Dortmund and Mainz. Stuttgart are unbeaten in their last 3 meetings with Hoffenheim, while Hoffenheim’s Andrej Kramaric has scored in 3 of 7 fixtures against Stuttgart. Later on Saturday, US international Tyler Adams will look to make his fourth Bundesliga start of the season for Leipzig in a home contest against Bochum. Leipzig are coming off a 6:0 win against Hertha last weekend, helping the club recover from a slower-than-expected start to the season. Bochum, conversely, are still smarting after a 7:0 loss to Bayern 2 weekends ago, but the club remains 3 points clear over a winless Fürth at the bottom of the table. This is small consolation, though, given the loss of striker Simon Zoller, who remains out of service for the foreseeable future. The club last won an away game in the Bundesliga all the way back on January 16, 2010. Looking ahead to Sunday, the competition for the top spots in the league table will continue when Mainz host Union Berlin, Bayern host Frankfurt, and Leverkusen travel to Bielefeld. Mainz are enjoying a fantastic start to the season, a start that is all the more remarkable given their close survival last season. Mainz are the lowest scorers in the top half of the table with just 6 goals, and each of those goals was scored by a different player. In the Bayern-Frankfurt match, look for Robert Lewandowski to make up for his failure to score last weekend.
