Visitors FC Bayern München defeated hosts SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Friday to at least temporarily extend their lead at the top of the table. Bayern’s Thomas Müller scored the match’s first goal just 10 minutes in, and he was followed by teammate Joshua Kimmich in the 31st minute. Early in the second half, Bayern’s Benjamin Pavard was sent off after fouling Julian Green, but Bayern extended their lead still further in the 68th minute when Fürth’s Sebastian Griesbeck bundled the ball into his own goal. Fürth finally scored a goal in the 88th minute when substitute Cedric Itten headed in a cross from Timothy Tillman, but the absence of any further goals in the final minutes allowed Bayern to book their fifth league win of the season. Müller’s goal moved him into 24th place in the league’s all-time scoring chart, and his 218 competitive goals for Bayern place him third in the club’s all-time list behind Gerd Müller and Robert Lewandowski. The weekend’s possibly most competitive match will take place on Saturday when Leverkusen host nearby Mainz. Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick could extend his scoring streak to 5, and he is joined on the pitch by teenage superstar Florian Wirtz and winger Moussa Diaby, and all 3 players are among the league’s top 10 scorers this season. Leverkusen have collected 19 of a possible 21 points from their past 7 Bundesliga meetings with Mainz. Mainz are even in the table on points with Leverkusen, and are enjoying their second-best start to a Bundesliga season in the club’s history. The club fought to a scoreless draw against Freiburg last weekend, and they clearly are missing captain Moussa Niakhate, who will miss a few more matches due to injury. Former Bayern midfielder could make his 200th Bundesliga appearance should he take the field for Mainz on Saturday, and the club has lost just 1 of 17 games with him in the starting line-up since he joined the club on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt last year. Later on Saturday, the two Borussias will face off, and Gladbach’s Matthias Ginter must do his best to end Erling Haaland’s goalscoring streak - Ginter made 102 competitive appearances for Dortmund between 2014 and 2017, but has started all 153 of his appearances for the Foals. Looking ahead to Sunday 3 of the 4 clubs playing will continue their struggle out of the bottom of the table: Bochum, Stuttgart, and Augsburg have managed just 11 points combined, a total that is behind each of the league’s top 3 individual clubs going into this matchday.
