Krzysztof Piatek scored twice on Friday to lead Hertha Berlin to its first home win of the season in a 3:1 victory over rivals 1. FC Union Berlin. Union Berlin’s Taiwo Awoniyi scored his club’s only goal of the match in the 20th minute, and Hertha’s Peter Pekarik tied the score in the 51st minute. Half-time substitute Piatek then delivered the match’s final 2 goals, in the 74th and 77th minutes, both off crosses from Javairo Dilrosun. The brace was Piatek’s first in the Bundesliga. Union Berlin’s loss was due in part to a red card given to Robert Andrich, who struck Lucas Tousart in the neck with his foot, leaving Union with just 10 men from the 23rd minute. One of Saturday’s most competitive matches may be that between Borussia Mönchengladbach and hosts SC Freiburg. Although Gladbach is 8 points ahead of Freiburg in the table, Gladbach last won in the Schwarzwald Stadion all the way back on March 23, 2002. Freiburg have not won a match since the opening day of the season, but did succeed in drawing at Augsburg last weekend. While Freiburg top scorer Nils Petersen has scored in all 4 of his home matches against Gladbach, Gladbach captain Lars Stindl has scored 3 of his 4 Bundesliga goals in games following a Champion League game, and Gladbach did lose to Inter Milan earlier in the week. Of course, Saturday’s biggest contest will be the late game between Bayern and visitors RB Leipzig. The 2 clubs are separated by just 2 points at the top of the table, and the winner of the match are guaranteed to lead the league at the conclusion of the matchday. Bayern rested both Lewandowski and Neuer earlier in the week against Atletico Madrid, so both should be in top form when they meet Leipzig. Both Joshua Kimmich and Alphonso Davies will remain on the sidelines. Leipzig are coming off a 4:3 win at Basaksehir on Wednesday, and left their last meeting with Bayern with a point and a clean sheet, which was the only match Bayern failed to win through last season’s 2nd half. Looking ahead to Sunday, don’t miss the contest between Bremen and visiting Stuttgart, who are tied in the table on points. Bremen are set to welcome back striker Josh Sargent from an ankle injury, while Stuttgart’s Nico Gonzalez could return from a knee ligament injury that kept him out of the match against Bayern.
