The 58th season of the Bundesliga began on Friday with an 8:0 blowout win for FC Bayern München over visiting FC Schalke 04. Serge Gnabry scored a hat trick with goals in the 4th, 47th, and 59th minutes, placing him at the top of the scorers’ table as the season gets underway. Bayern’s other goals came from Leon Goretzka in the 19th minute, Thomas Müller in the 69th minute, Leroy Sané in the 71st minute, and Jamal Musiala in the 81st minute. Gnabry’s goal in the 4th minute was the fastest goal in a season-opening match since Bart Goor scored in the 1st minute for Hertha Berlin against Borussia Dortmund in 2002, and this was Gnabry’s first-ever Bundesliga hat trick. Jamal Musiala’s goal made him Bayern’s youngest-ever Bundesliga scorer: Musiala is just 17 years old. And one additional statistic occurred on Friday: no team had ever scored more than 6 goals in the 1st game of a Bundesliga season. Both of the clubs promoted to the 1. Bundesliga for this season will make their season debuts on Saturday. DSC Arminia Bielefeld are back for the 1st time since 2009 and will travel to Frankfurt. Bielefeld finished the prior season 10 points ahead of their nearest competitor and had both the best attack and best defense of the 2. Bundesliga. Their most successful attacker last season, Fabian Klos, will be the biggest threat to Frankfurt’s defense, but Klos will be playing without his scoring partner, Andreas Voglsammler, who is injured. VfB Stuttgart has also returned to the 1. Bundesliga for this season, and will start their season with a derby against visiting Sport-Club Freiburg. Stuttgart will have to do without their leading scorer from last season, Nicolas Gonzalez, who picked up an injury in the pre-season. Stuttgart is, however, likely to debut 2 new arrivals: Waldemar Anton and Wataru Endo, and will be captained by former Leverkusen and Dortmund midfielder Gonzalo Castro. Stuttgart, who won the Bundesliga title at the end of the 2006-7 season, are undefeated in 10 Bundesliga meetings with Freiburg. The late match on Saturday will be that between the 2 Borussias, when Dortmund host Gladbach. Dortmund’s Erling Haaland can begin a potential race with Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski for the title of top goalscorer - Haaland did not join Dortmund last season until the winter, but nevertheless managed to score 13 goals in 15 matches, for an average of 1 goal every 82 minutes. Worth watching, however, is US youngster Gio Reyna, who has scored 4 goals in the 5 games in which he has featured in the pre-season.
