1. FSV Mainz 05 earned an away win on Friday against Fortuna Düsseldorf. The game’s lone goal came in the 67th minute, when Jean-Phillipe Mateta shot low through the legs of Michael Rensing. The goal was Mateta’s 4th of the season, and Mateta is 1 of only 7 Mainz players to have found the net so far this season. The points earned on Friday temporarily move Mainz into 8th place in the league, tied with Bremen on points, while the struggling Düsseldorf club remains in the relegation zone. The league’s leading club, Borussia Dortmund, will look to extend their unbeaten streak on Saturday when they host Freiburg. Dortmund is the league’s only club to remain undefeated 12 games into the season, and this is the first season in the club’s history they have done so. Dortmund have also scored 35 goals so far this season: the same number as the league’s bottom 3 clubs combined. The last time Dortmund had so many goals at this point in the season was in the Bundesliga’s first season in 1963. Freiburg, for their part, have a lead of their own this season: they have drawn in 5 of their 12 matches so far, and their only win in their last 7 was an impressive victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach. A key match to watch on Saturday will be the contest between Bayern and Bremen, who are separated by only 3 points in the table. Bayern is now 9 points behind Dortmund, but is coming off a 5:1 victory midweek over Benfica, and may see the returns from injury of Thiago Alcantara and Kingsley Coman. Furthermore, Bremen have managed to win just 1 of their last 19 encounters with Bayern, and that was more than a decade ago. Looking ahead to Sunday and Monday, another key encounter will be that on Sunday between Leipzig and Gladbach, who are separated by just 4 points at the top of the table and feature 4 of the league’s top scorers in Alassane Pléa, Thorgan Hazard, Yussuf Poulsen, and Timo Werner. On Monday, Nürnberg will try to stay out of the relegation zone when they host Leverkusen - both of the club’s wins this season have occurred at home. However, Leverkusen have won their last 5 meetings with Nürnberg, all of which occurred between 2012 and 2014.
