RB Leipzig extended its lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to 6 points with a 4:1 victory over Freiburg on Friday. Striker Timo Werner scored 2 goals just 14 minutes apart within the first half, and was joined by Leipzig’s Naby Keita and Marcel Sabitzer in picking up the win, while Freiburg’s only goal came early in the match from Florian Niederlechner. Bayern, coming off their defeat last weekend against Dortmund, will need to win their home match against Leverkusen to cut Leipzig’s lead in the standings to 3 points. 3 of last season’s top scorers will appear in the match: Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. While Lewandowski and Hernandez so far this season have together scored 12 goals, Müller is still looking for his first. Uli Hoeneß has replaced Karl Hopfner as FC Bayern’s president, having run unopposed for the job that he previously held from 2009 to 2014 before his conviction for tax evasion. Saturday’s big derby will feature league trailer Hamburg hosting nearby, both geographically and in the table, Werder Bremen. Hamburg coach Markus Gisdol may leave his lineup unchanged from last week, when he picked up his first favorable result of his tenure with a 2:2 draw against Hoffenheim. A win for Bremen could pull them out of the relegation zone, as only 6 points separate the league’s 5 bottom clubs. Another match to watch will be the contest between the two clubs from cities known for auto manufacturing: Wolfsburg will travel to Ingolstadt on Saturday, and the teams are separated in the table by just 4 points. Wolfsburg’s Julian Draxler is expected to return following an adductor injury, while Ingolstadt hopes that Markus Suttner will be well enough to play after the hit he received in the last match against Darmstadt. On Friday, China and Germany signed an agreement for a football partnership between the 2 countries, which is intended to promote the growth of the sport in China. The agreement came out of earlier talks between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
