A flurry of goals in the second half resulted in a 5:1 comeback victory on Friday for hosts RB Leipzig over visitors VfB Stuttgart. Stuttgart established its lead in the 35th minute, when Serhou Guirassy was set up by Atakan Karazor. Leipzig tied the match in the 51st minute with a goal from Benjamin Henrichs, and his goal was followed by goals from Dani Olmo, Lois Openda, Kevin Kampl, and Xavi Simons. Openda now has goals in 2 appearances, and Olmo has struck 5 times in 3 competitive matches in 2023 and 2024. Leipzig remain undefeated in 11 meetings with Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, and now occupy 2nd place in the table going into the rest of the weekend’s contests. Those contests will include a couple derbies, the first of which is the late match on Saturday between hosts Borussia Mönchengladbach and visitors Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Leverkusen and standout Xabi Alonso are coming off a 3:2 win over Leipzig on the league’s opening weekend, while the hosts managed to eke out a 4:4 draw at Augsburg. The Foals have lost only 1 of their last 8 league games at home and last season earned 33 of their 43 points at Borussia-Park. Die Werkself, meanwhile, are unbeaten in 7 Bundesliga meetings with Gladbach and have won their last 4 visits to Borussia-Park. On Sunday, Harry Kane is set to make his first home start for FC Bayern München when the club hosts nearby FC Augsburg. The hosts are coming off a 4:0 win over hosts SV Werder Bremen last weekend, thanks in part to a goal and an assist from Kane. The new No. 9 will be joined in attack by Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman, but Jamal Musiala will miss the match due to a hamstring injury. Although Augsburg only managed a draw in the season’s opening weekend, the club did give a fine performance in coming back from deficits of 2:0 and 3:1. Augsburg are already seeing the benefit of adding summer signing Sven Michel to the starting lineup, and colleague Mergim Berisha did manage to hit a brace in a 5:3 loss to Bayern last season. Bayern have lost their last 2 fixtures at the Allianz Arena, although both of those losses occurred against Leipzig, and Bayern haven’t suffered 3 straight competitive defeats at home since 1977. They also haven’t lost their first Bundesliga home game of a season since 2011, when Gladbach defeated them 1:0. Augsburg would certainly like to break their current streak of 13 league assignments on the road without a win, which is a club record for them. |
