Timo Werner scored his first Bundesliga hat trick on Friday when visiting club RB Leipzig maintained their perfect record in a 3:1 win over hosts Borussia Mönchengladbach. Werner’s goals came in the 38th and 47th minutes, and in the 4th minute of extra time, and Gladbach’s lone goal was scored by Breel Embolo in the 1st minute of extra time. The victory extended Leipzig’s remarkable record against Gladbach: Leipzig have won all 4 of their visits to Gladbach and are unbeaten against Gladbach overall, with 5 wins and 2 draws. The victory also placed Leipzig at the top of the table going into the weekend’s remaining matches, and Werner is now tied with Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski at the top of the scorer’s table. Bayern will host Mainz on Saturday, and Barcelona loanee Philippe Coutinho is expected to make his full Bundesliga debut (he played 33 minutes in the 2nd half last weekend.) Mainz has struggled through the first 2 matchdays this season, having lost all 3 of their competitive outings this season, and are now without the services of star striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is sidelined with a knee injury. Mainz may also have to play without new defender Jerry St. Juste, who has a dislocated shoulder. Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski has scored all 5 of Bayern’s goals so far this season, and Bayern have won each of their last 4 matches against Mainz. A key competition on Saturday will be that between visiting Hoffenheim and hosts Leverkusen. Hoffenheim is 1 victory behind Leverkusen in the table, but Hoffenheim suffered a narrow 0:1 loss at Frankfurt on the opening weekend before enjoying a 5-goal thriller against Bremen a week later, and defeated Leverkusen 4:1 both times the clubs met last season. Leverkusen, meanwhile, has a perfect record this season, thanks in part to Kai Havertz and Kevin Volland, and picked up both Nadiem Amiri and Kerem Demirbay from Hoffenheim over the summer. Later on Saturday, Dortmund will look to return to the top of the table when they visit 1. FC Union Berlin. The contest will be a reunion of sorts for Union center-back Neven Subotic, who made 196 Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund between 2008 and 2018, including back-t0-back titles under Jürgen Klopp in 2011 and 2012. On Sunday, Frankfurt will host Düsseldorf, and both clubs have gone 1-1 so far this season. Frankfurt beat Düsseldorf both at home and away last season, and may start Dutch forward Bas Dost, who arrived from Sporting Lisbon earlier in the week. Watch for USA right-back Timothy Chandler to play his 100th game for Eintracht should he appear on Sunday. By Rich
