Schalke thoroughly defeated host Leverkusen on Friday to surge ahead to 8th place in the 1. Bundesliga table. Schalke’s Guido Burgstaller, earlier this season a top scorer in the 2. Bundesliga for Nürnberg, hit the net twice, in the 6th minute and again just 5 minutes into the 2nd half, and Schalke’s other goals came from Benedikt Howedes and Alessando Schopf. Leverkusen’s lone goal came from Stefan Kiessling in the 69th minute, and the loss means that Leverkusen has now played 4 matches without a win. Thiago Alcantara has extended his contract with Bayern München until 2021. Alcantara joined Bayern from Barcelona in 2013, and has scored 8 goals and assisted in every appearance so far this season. Alcantara is also the son of Brazil 1994 World Cup winner Mazinho. Werder Bremen, who have made a surprise resurgence in the table in recent weeks, announced that forward Aron Johannsson will be allowed to leave the club this summer. The US international joined Bremen in 2015, but has had 2 disappointing years, due in part to a hip injury in his first season. This season has seen him make only 2 starts in the opening 2 games and 7 substitute appearances. Borussia Dortmund defender Marc Bartra said he is “happy” with his recovery following wrist surgery after the bus attack earlier this month. The Spanish international is expected to be out for at least a month, but was the only Dortmund player seriously injured in the attack. Dortmund will be making a week-long tour of Asia this summer and will compete against the Urawa Reds and AC Milan, and will be touring the US in the summer of 2018. Nuri Sahin will still be with the club then, as he has extended his contract to 2019. He is currently out with an ankle injury, but is expected to return to play before the end of the season. Sahin began his professional career with Dortmund in 2005 and has made 203 appearances and scored 19 goals. His only absence from the club, apart from injuries, came with his time at Real Madrid from 2011-2013. Hertha Berlin is preparing to open talks to extend the loan with Liverpool midfielder Allan. Allan joined Liverpool from Porto Alegre in 2015, but has yet to play in the Premier League, having played on loan for SJK in Finland and Sint-Truiden in Belgium before coming to Hertha. Although the Brazilian has only made 5 starts for Hertha, but coach Pal Dardai was impressed with Allan’s play in Saturday’s 1:0 win over Wolfsburg. Bayern could win the league title this weekend: all it needs is a win in Wolfsburg and a Leipzig loss against Ingolstadt. By Rich
Thilo Kehrer is a 20-year-old defender for FC Schalke 04. Kehrer was born September 21, 1966, in Tübingen, Germany, to a German father and Burundian mother, and began playing football for TSG Tübingen in 2000. His youth career continued at SSV Reutlingen 05 from 2006 to 2010, VfB Stuttgart from 2010 to 2012, and Schalke 04 from 2012 to 2015. His senior career began in 2015 on Schalke’s reserve squad, and his first Bundesliga match was on February 6, 2015 against Wolfsburg, in a 3:0 home win. Kehrer’s sister, Sarah Kehrer, has been dating FC Arsenal player and former Bremer Serge Gnabry. By Rich
Hertha Berlin suffered its second home loss of the season at the hands of visiting Hoffenheim on Friday. Hertha’s lone goal came early in the match from Peter Pekarik, and later lost Maximilian Mittelstädt due to a second yellow card. Hoffenheim’s goals came from Andrej Kramaric at the 39th and 86th minutes, and from Niklas Süle at the 76th minute. The win moves Hoffenheim into a momentary 3rd place in the table going into Saturday’s matches, including the all-important derby between Schalke and Dortmund, and the loss for Hertha endangers their Champions League outlook for next season. Hertha did announce this week their plans to move into a new stadium by 2025, to be privately funded. Attendance at home matches in the aging Olympiastadion averages only 64%, and the club’s first wish is to build a “pure football arena” next to their current home. Saturday will see the second Revierderby of the season, as Schalke hosts Dortmund, and the stakes are high: Dortmund needs a win to pull back into 3rd place in the table and to give them momentum for next weekend’s match against Bayern, while Schalke need to make up a 4-point gap to pull into Europa League territory and to possibly qualify for Champions League play next season. Dortmund will be playing without Mario Götze, Sebastian Rode, Erik Durm, Andre Schürrle, and Marco Reus. For Schalke, the stakes are even higher in the long term: the Bundesliga is dominated by Bayern and Dortmund, with Leipzig emerging this season as a wealthy rival, and as the league becomes more popular internationally, Schalke, with its storied history, wants to remain relevant, and needs a spot in the Champions League to do so. Bayer Leverkusen’s Lars Bender is scheduled to undergo an ankle operation next week and will miss the rest of the season. The ankle injury occurred on March 4th in a loss to Dortmund. Bayern München, who will be playing in their own derby Saturday against nearby Augsburg, announced the opening of a football school in Shenzhen, China, which will be regularly visited by Bayern’s youth coaches. Bayern will play against AC Milan in Shenzhen on July 22nd as part of their summer tour of China and Singapore. |
