Josha Mamdou Karboue Vagnoman is a 22-year-old defender for VfB Stuttgart. Vagnoman was born on December 11, 2000 in Hamburg, Germany, and spent his youth career playing for SC Poppenbüttel in 2009, Hummelsbütteler SV from 2009 to 2010, and Hamburger SV from 2010 to 2018. In February 2018, newly appointed head coach Bernd Hollerbach promoted him to Hamburg’s first squad for the coming campaign. He made his professional debut on March 10, 2018 in a match against FC Bayern München in a 6:0 home loss. Vagnoman ultimately made 74 appearances for Hamburger SV and Hamburger SV II before joining his current club in 2022. He has also made 19 appearances for Germany’s U17, U18, U19, U20, and U21 squads since 2017.

A last-minute goal by substitute Fredrik Jensen lifted Augsburg to a 1:0 win on Friday over visitors TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. In addition to the home field advantage, Augsburg were coming off two home wins, over Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach, but failed to find the net in Friday’s match until Jensen’s goal in the 88th minute. The victory moves Augsburg seven points clear of the relegation places and five points above Hoffenheim, who have now gone 11 Bundesliga games without a win, their longest winless streak since early 2009. The biggest match of the weekend is probably the historic fixture between hosts Borussia Mönchengladbach and visitors Bayern München on Saturday. The importance of this fixture dates back to the 1970s, when the two clubs shared the Meisterschale in nine consecutive seasons. Both clubs arrived in the top flight in 1965, having been promoted from their respective regional leagues. Bayern’s success in the ensuing years was centered around the trio of goalkeeper Sepp Maier, sweeper Franz Beckenbauer, and center-forward Gerd Müller. Müller remains the Bundesliga’s all-time leading scorer with 365 goals, and his 30 goals in the 1968-69 season guided the club to their first national title. Gladbach, meanwhile, were guided by the legendary Hennes Weisweiler, who was also responsible for training coaches at the German Sports University in Cologne, and later gave his name to the national coaching center. Gladbach’s roster at that time included star playmaker Günter Netzer, Berti Vogts, Herbert Wimmer, and Jupp Heynckes, and the squad swept back-to-back titles in 1970 and 1971. The end of the 1970s, however, was a turning point in the fortunes of the clubs. Gladbach narrowly missed out on the national title in 1984, and their only trophy since then has been the DFB Cup in 1995. Bayern, conversely, have won thirty-two national titles, including ten consecutively since 2013. As we look to Saturday’s contest, Gladbach are coming off a 4:1 loss to Hertha Berlin, and have collected just one win in five matches since the start of 2023. Bayern are coming off a win over Bochum last Saturday, but only managed a draw in the reverse fixture earlier this season. This match will be the 110th top-flight meeting between the two clubs: only Bayern and Werder Bremen have met more often, with 111. Whatever the outcome of the Bayern-Gladbach contest, the rest of the table will not be decided until Sunday, when Union Berlin and Borussia Dortmund play their respective home games.
