USA international striker Josh Sargent made his Bundesliga debut on Friday, scoring just over a minute of after coming off the bench, to seal a 3:1 win for SV Werder Bremen over visiting Fortuna Düsseldorf. The match’s first goal came in the 20th minute from Bremen’s Kevin Möhwald scored off a pass from Max Kruse, which was also Möhwald’s maiden Bundesliga goal and came on his first start with a top-flight club. The visitors tied the match just before the first half ended, when Dodi Lukebakio converted a penalty. The hosts pulled again, though, when Martin Harnik poked in a rebound after a shot from Davy Klaassen was blocked, and sealed the match with Sargent’s goal in the 78th minute. With the win, Bremen is now in 7th place and tied with Hoffenheim on points going into Saturday’s match. The participants in one of the league’s key rivalries meet on Saturday, when Dortmund travels to nearby Gelsenkirchen for the league’s Revierderby. Borussia Dortmund, undefeated this season, is clearly the league’s top club during the season’s first half, but they actually finished behind Schalke at the end of last season. Dortmund have turned things around this season, and have 2 of the league’s top scorers in Paco Alcácer and Marco Reus, who on goals has had his best Hinrunde since joining BVB. Schalke, conversely, struggled in the opening weeks of the season, but have suffered just 1 loss in their last 5 matches, and came from behind to pick up a point against Hoffenheim last weekend. The Royal Blues are also unbeaten in their last 5 matches against Dortmund. Should Dortmund win on Saturday and Gladbach and Leipzig lose their matches, Dortmund will win the Herbstmeisterschaft. Later on Saturday, Eintracht Frankfurt will travel to Berlin, the result of which will be key to determining which clubs remain at the top of the table as the holiday break approaches. Frankfurt had been enjoying a 7-game unbeaten streak until losing to Wolfsburg last weekend by 1 goal. A Hertha win would tie the 2 clubs in the table on points, and Hertha have more wins and have scored more goals against Frankfurt than against any other Bundesliga club. On Sunday, 2 of the league’s bottom-dwellers, Stuttgart and Hannover, both face away matches against much more successful clubs, dimming their prospects of escaping the relegation zone before the winter break.
