Benno Schmitz is a twenty-two-year-old full-back for RB Leipzig. Schmitz was born in 1994 in Munich and began playing football for SV Waldperlach before moving to Bayern Munich’s youth organization in 2001. His senior career continued at Bayern Munich when he was promoted to their reserve team in 2012, but left in 2014 when he was unable to obtain a spot on their first squad. Following 7 appearances for FC Liefering, he joined RB Salzburg in 2014 and made 45 appearances from 2014 to 2016. He joined RB Leipzig earlier this year and has appeared in matches against Hoffenheim, Cologne, Leverkusen, and Freiburg. Leipzig’s sporting director Ralf Rangnick described Schmitz as a player who can be “used flexibly, is familiar with our style of play, and with his abilities will surely strengthen our squad.” By Rich Murray
Bayern München defeated Mainz 3:1 on Friday to momentarily regain the lead at the top of the table going into Saturday’s contests. Two of Bayern’s goals came from Robert Lewandowski, and the goals moved him into third place in the league-wide goal hunt. Bayern’s third goal came from Arjen Robben, while Mainz’ John Cordoba had scored the first goal of the match at the 4th minute. Mainz retains its spot in the middle of the table, tied with Schalke, and only 1 point ahead of Leverkusen and 2 points ahead of Freiburg. We can look forward to an interesting contest on Saturday between two of the league’s most successful clubs in recent weeks, when Leipzig hosts Schalke on Saturday afternoon. Newcomer Leipzig has been battling Bayern for the league’s best record this season, and after a terrible start, Schalke has turned its season around, climbing to 8th place. In fact, the two teams with the best records in the last 7 matchdays are Leipzig and Schalke. A Leipzig win on Saturday would again put the club 3 points ahead of Bayern, while a Schalke win would put them close to perennial rival Dortmund. Dortmund, meanwhile, will be hosting nearby rival Gladbach, who have struggled this year, having won only 3 of 12 matches. Another match to watch this weekend is the contest between Leverkusen and Freiburg. The two clubs are in a dead heat in the middle of the table, separated by only 1 point, and both have won exactly 5 matches so far. Leverkusen will have to compete without forward Kevin Volland, who tore a thigh muscle in training and is expected to be out for 2 months. Volland joined Leverkusen this past summer for a reported 20 million Euros. Leverkusen is also hoping that the scoring drought of star Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, who hasn’t found the net in the last 708 minutes he has been on the pitch, will end. Although the lack of scoring has resulted in his being benched for the games against Leipzig and Bayern, sporting director Rudi Voller said he is “confident” that the striker will score again soon. Over in Wolfsburg, there is speculation that midfielder Luiz Gustavo may leave during the next transfer window, with both Inter Milan and Juventus having shown interest.
