Borussia Dortmund moved momentarily into 2nd place in the Bundesliga table on Friday with a 3:2 win over hosts 1. FC Köln. The match’s first goal, and the Bundesliga’s 500th of this season, came in the 35th minute when BVB newcomer Michy Batshuayi rammed in his first goal for his new club off a pass from Jeremy Toljan. The newcomer almost had a 2nd goal just a few minutes later, but the goal was overturned after consultation with the video assistant. Cologne tied the score at the 60th minute when Simon Zoller scored his first Bundesliga goal since last May, but the draw was broken when Batshuayi scored his 2nd goal at the 62nd minute. Cologne tied the score again in the 69th minute when Jorge Mere scored his first-ever Bundesliga goal, but the match was finally decided when André Schürrle scored in the 84th minute off an assist from Batshuayi. The win means that BVB trainer Peter Stöger remains unbeaten since joining the club. The departure of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for Arsenal in the English Premier League leaves Bayern standout Robert Lewandowski comfortably at the top of the table when his club travels to Mainz on Saturday. Lewandowski has scored 13 goals in 14 Bundesliga appearances against Mainz. A win over Mainz would also extend Bayern’s lead further. Mainz is currently just 3 points out of the relegation zone, but have not won any of their last 5 home matches against Bayern, and have suffered more defeats (16) and given up more goals (60) against Bayern than against any other club. This weekend, they will forgo the services of 3 players (Adler, Bungert, and Onisiwo) and may start with new signing Anthony Ujah. Bayern, on the other hand, are without Manuel Neuer, Thiago Alcantara, Christian Früchtl, Arturo Vidal, and David Alaba. Hertha fans have until February 8th to register, by replying to a club tweet, for the opportunity to have a lifelong season ticket tattooed on an arm. The tattoo will be awarded to the one fan who makes the best case for receiving the prize. The tattoo itself will show an outline of the city of Berlin, featuring the Olympiastadion and the Hertha badge, and a QR code that will allow entry to every home game By Rich
Manuel Schmiedebach is a 29-year-old midfielder for Hannover 96. From 2006 to 2008, he spent the first years of his senior career on Hertha’s reserve squad, and then joined Hannover 96 II in the Regionalliga Nord on a free transfer. The following season, in November 2009, he made his first appearance in the Bundesliga playing against his former club. Since then, he has made approximately 200 appearances for Hannover. Schmiedebach grew up bilingual in German and Spanish, as his mother Betty is a Columbian-born Venezuelan of Moroccan descent. By Rich
Borussia Dortmund came from behind on Friday to draw hosts Hertha Berlin, giving each side an important point going into Saturday’s matches. Hertha’s goal came in the 46th minute from Davie Selke, who scored his 5th goal of the season. Dortmund’s goal was a header in the 71st minute from Shinji Kagawa off a pass from Jadon Sancho, and was also the 20,000th away goal in Bundesliga history. The draw means that Hertha are unbeaten in 4 home games against Borussia, while BVB have yet to win this season when playing without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Bayern München full-back Joshua Kimmich has been named Germany’s Player of the Year for 2017 in a poll by the DFB, beating competitors Julian Draxler and Marc-Andre ter Stegen by taking over 20,000 votes from over 52,000 votes cast. Kimmich featured in 24 consecutive matches for Germany, which is 10 shy of the national team’s recordholder Berti Vogts. Bayern have also signed midfielder Leon Goretzka from rivals Schalke. The 22-year-old Goretzka’s current contract with Schalke expires at the end of the current season, and the new contract will bring Goretzka to Bayern in July on a 4-and-a-half-year deal. Goretzka made a name for himself at VfL Bochum before joining Schalke in 2013, where he has scored 14 goals in 101 Bundesliga appearances for Schalke, and also helped the German national team win the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia. One of the top contests to watch on Saturday will be the duel between Leverkusen and Hoffenheim, who are separated in the table by just 1 point, and who feature 2 of the league’s top strikers: Leverkusen’s Kevin Volland and Hoffenheim’s Mark Uth. The 2 strikers are themselves separated by just 1 goal in the top scorers table, and are both seeking the attention of German national coach Joachim Löw with the FIFA World Cup just a few months away. Volland once played for Hoffenheim, and the 2 players keep in touch regularly via WhatsApp, spent part of their recent holidays together, and Volland attended Uth’s wedding last summer. The teams played a 2:2 draw back in August, and both contests last season were won by Hoffenheim. Uth will also be looking to make a good impression on Schalke, as he recently agreed to move to Gelsenkirchen at the end of this season. Frankfurt beat Monchengladbach at home this Friday night to jump into 2nd place. |
